Water Safety Events 2015

THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IN LAKE COUNTY PROMOTES WATER SAFETY EVENTS 

Lake County - The Florida Department of Health in Lake County, the Lake County Public Safety Department, Lake Emergency Medical Services, along with participating municipalities and community partners have joined together with Swimming for Life to host Water Safety Day.  A free swimming demonstration for children will be held in six Lake County cities on Saturday, May 16, 2015. 

This is the fourth annual, and largest, water safety and drowning prevention event the partners have organized with the goal of keeping Lake County children safe around lakes and pools.

Highlights of each event will include mock drowning rescues, life jacket fittings, CPR demonstrations, door prizes and giveaways.  There will also be safety video presentations and swimming lessons.

“We live in a county with over 1,000 lakes and rivers, chances are our residents participate in many water activities.  We will continue to raise water safety awareness with events such as this one in order to decrease the possibility of injury and drowning in our community” said Aaron Kissler, Administrator, Florida Department of Health in Lake County.

Each day in the U.S., 10 people die from drowning and two of these are children under the age of 14, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Florida loses more children under age five to drowning than any other state. Annually in Florida, enough children to fill three to four preschool classrooms drown and do not live to see their fifth birthday. For Children among ages 1-4, Florida overwhelmingly has the highest unintentional drowning rate in the nation and is the leading cause of death for this age group.

Drowning is QUICK and QUIET!

  • Young children can drown in less than...2 INCHES OF WATER
  • Pool submersions involving children happen quickly and silently with most child drowning victims missing from sight for...LESS THAN 5 MINUTES
  • Over 1/4 of all drowning’s occur in swimming pools with adults present but...ADULTS PREOCCUPIED

Water Safety Day events are open to the public and registration is not required. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.  Participants are asked to wear proper swimming attire and bring towels.
